Adventures in Scotland
We look forward to sharing with you some of our favourite circular walks in Scotland as we explore the beautiful countryside around our new home. Our descriptions will include photos, wildlife to look out for, maps and an indication of the terrain and difficulty of the routes.
We moved back to Scotland in 2021, to the lovely village of Killearn in Stirlingshire, where we were lucky enough to live on Carbeth Estate for 10 months.Sam has been writing about the wildlife on the Estate on the Carbeth Home Farm blog.
We formerly lived in the Scottish Borders, so when the right house turned up we moved back to Coldstream in autumn 2021. We hope our advetures in these two areas will inspire you to go outdoors and appreciate Scotland.
Stunning Walk in the Cheviots
It was a sunny and (relatively) warm Easter Monday when we set out on this walk in the Cheviots, exploring the Scottish side of the range. Whilst the OS map of the English side is riddled with rights of way, these indications of routes stop once you get to the…

The 10th April is our wedding anniversary so what better way to celebrate this auspicious occasion than enjoying good weather in the Scottish Borders with some friends. Views, Viaducts and a Famous Junction. A lovely late winter morning saw us setting off for a trail run with a friend on this Kelso circular route. Once again we had seen the route in the “Borders 40 best walks” book, however we did it in the reverse direction. Due…

Blackadder and a hillfort This splendid Greenlaw circular walk is the first walk we have done from Robbie Porteous’ “Scottish Borders 40 favourite walks” book – a very welcome Christmas gift from my sister. Of course, in true Sam and Peter style we didn’t follow the exact route as described,…

Earlston Circular – a mixture of new and familiar So, I have been a bit quiet on the blog lately, because we have moved house, re-locating to Coldstream in the Scottish Borders. Coldstream is a lovely town on the borders between in England and Scotland. It is excellent for walking,…

It was one of those gorgeous autumn days when we just had to make the most of the weather, so we left the office and set off for a return trip to Loch Katrine. Last time we had been there had been a drizzly, grey day in June and although…

Going Anti-clockwise There is a large car park at the start of the walk, with a good information board, showing the three walks available. We chose the medium route – waymarked in red, which is 4 miles long and we set off along the forestry road uphill. This was easy…

Trail races are like buses – months without one and then two over consecutive weeks. Just a week after Arrochar 10k we were standing in beautiful sunshine on the playing field at Kippen for the Kippen Trail Race. Mingling at the start made us realise what a fabulous community the…

When we moved up to Scotland in early 2021, Arrochar 10k was the first race we entered and I am so pleased we did. This was a simply stunning course, starting at the head of the tidal Loch Long and then going up through forest tracks, down through woods and…

So Good We Went There Twice. Back in March this year we decided to have a week off work and spend some time exploring the wonderful area we had moved to. One of the first walks we did was up from Lendrick Hill, close to Brig O’ Turk. We loved…
